Help Learners Find Products With Search Keywords

Learners don’t always search with the same words you use in a product’s title or description. Search keywords close that gap. Add the terms your learners are likely to type — acronyms, alternate names, or related topics — and full site search can return the product when someone searches for them.

Keywords are for search only. Learners never see them on the product page, in the catalog, in widgets, or in product feeds and API responses. Search keywords are available on every Elevate account, and accounts with Cadmium AI enabled can generate suggested keywords from the product’s content.

Add keywords to a product

  1. Open the product you want to edit, or start creating a new product.
  2. Go to Basic Info > Title/Description.
  3. Fill in the title, summary, and description. The Keywords field appears below Short Product URL once all three have content.
  4. In the Keywords field, type a keyword, then press Tab or type a comma. The keyword is added as its own chip.
  5. Repeat for each keyword you want to add.
  6. Save the product. Keywords aren’t kept until the product is saved.

To remove a keyword, click the x on its chip, or place your cursor after it and press Backspace. Then save the product.

Keyword rules

  • You can add as many keywords as you need.
  • Each keyword can be up to 255 characters.
  • Keywords must be plain text. If a keyword is too long or includes HTML, the product won’t save, and a message names the keyword to fix.
  • Each keyword is added once. Matching ignores capitalization, so Webinar and webinar count as the same keyword.
  • Blank keywords can’t be added.

CADMIUM RECOMMENDS

Think like your learners. Add acronyms and their spelled-out forms, older or informal course names, and related topics people might search for. Keywords match the way they’re written, so include the variations your learners are most likely to type.

Use AI suggestions

If Cadmium AI is enabled on your account, a Suggestions button appears beside the Keywords field on both the create and edit pages. This is the same setting that turns on the AI text assistant in the editor. When Cadmium AI isn’t enabled, the button doesn’t appear, and you can still add keywords manually.

  1. On the Title/Description tab, fill in the title, summary, and description. Suggestions are based on what’s on the page right now, including edits you haven’t saved yet.
  2. Click Suggestions. Suggested keywords appear below the field as chips with a plus sign (+).
  3. Click a suggestion to add it to the Keywords field, or click Add all to add every suggestion.
  4. Review the keywords in the field and remove any that don’t fit.
  5. Save the product.

Want a fresh set? Click Suggestions again. New suggestions replace the ones you haven’t added, and keywords already in the field stay put. Nothing is stored until you save the product.

IMPORTANT NOTE

AI suggestions are never added automatically. Review each suggestion before you add it, and make sure every keyword accurately reflects the product.

If suggestions don’t appear

When suggestions can’t be generated, a message appears below the field. If the product doesn’t have enough content, you’ll see “No new suggestions were returned. Add more detail to the title, summary or description and try again.” Add more detail and click Suggestions again.

You can request suggestions up to 10 times a minute. If you reach the limit, wait a moment and try again.

Include keywords in full site search

Saved keywords don’t affect search until you turn them on in your site settings.

  1. Go to General Settings > Full Site Search.
  2. Under Keyword Field Matching, select Keywords. You can select it alongside Title, Summary or Description, and Speaker’s Name.
  3. Save your settings.

Now, when a learner searches the full site for a term that matches a product’s keyword, that product appears in the results, the same way it would for a title or description match. To stop matching on keywords, clear the Keywords checkbox and save.

NOTE

Keywords apply to full site search only. Catalog search and product page search don’t match on keywords. Search results also respect product visibility, so a learner only sees products they’re allowed to view.
